What do our site representatives do?

Plot inspections
Our inspections are carried out in the spirit of the BHCC ‘Strategy’ for the Brighton and Hove Allotments: with respect for biodiversity, wildlife and mental health/disability issues. We believe that inspections should not be a cause of stress for the tenants and for this reason we notify the inspection days in advance through posters and the MAHS newsletter. We base our inspections on basic principles: 1) enjoy your plot; 2) respect your neighbours; 3) respect the environment and 4) mind Health and Safety. We mainly focus on: abandoned plots, hazards, rubbish, the use/abuse of pollutants/dangerous chemicals, and accessibility to shared paths. We may report weeds if they are so out of control that they threaten adjacent cultivated plots.

New Lettings
There is a fairly regular turnover of plots. We show round people on the waiting list and let out plots to new tenants. We issue keys and are responsible for deposits on the keys.

Liaison work
We liaise with the City Council and the Police over issues such as repairs to the main gate and perimeter fences, fly-tipping, and break-ins.

Mediation
We mediate between tenants and generally aim to maintain a harmonious atmosphere on the site.

The City Council says that:
‘The site representative is a tenant who acts as a go-between for both the council and allotment tenants. They can pass information to the council on issues relating to the running of the allotment site, issues such as site security and ensuring a working water supply.
The site representative also shows potential new tenants around vacant allotment plots, signs-up new tenants and co-workers and gives out keys.’
